Angkor

Cambodians differ from the rest of the world in the fact that they don't celebrate their birthdays. Often they are unaware of it. But, otherwise they have various events to celebrate, which are as follows:

January 1:
International New Year Day. It is celebrated with much pomp and show and the city of Pnom Penh is decorated.

April 12, 13 and 14:
The Cambodian New Year is celebrated for three consecutive days following the Indian calendar. It is called Chaul Chnam (Entering New Year). This occasion is celebrated by exchanging gifts between elders and children, wearing new clothes, decorating their houses, decorating the old things and bringing a new look to everything. They worship Lord Buddha by offering him flowers, candles, incense, food and drinks. Cambodians also visit monastery and give food to monks. The Children wash the feet of their parents with red, pink and yellow water.

May 20:
The Day of Hatred. The crime of Khmer Rouge regime is mourned.

May 25:
Chrat Preah Nengkal (Royal plough Ceremony) is celebrated for the commencements of rainy season.

May 29:
Vesaka Bochea (Buddha's Birthday) and is notable for the events of Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death.

June 1:
International Childrens's Day

September 24:
Constitution Day.

October 21:
Paris Peace Accord Day, when Cambodians celebrate the signing of peace accord that ended the Civil War (1991)

October 24-26:

Pchum Ben Day (The Soul Day). On this day, Cambodians give offerings to the soul of relatives and friends who have passed away. They also attend pagodas and give food to monks.

November 7-8:
Bon Om Tuk (Water Festival). This festival occurs for three days, celebrating the ushering rains. During the summer season water dries up choking the rivers to small lakes and dried water bodies. This festival celebrates the current reversing in Tonle Sap Lake. Water overflows ushering in the fishing seasons and harvesting time. People perform boat races and display fireworks.

November 9:
Cambodia's Independence Day. Cambodia won Independence from France in 1953. People from all walks of life celebrate this day, which enhances the unity in the country.

December 10:
the UN Human Rights Day.

Late December
Cambodians celebrate half Marathon in Angkor Wat. It is a spectacular festival and invites competitors from around the world for participation.

The Cambodians also celebrate their respective King's and Queen's Birthday with fireworks, lightings all over, displays in television and newspapers and wishing them a long life.
