Cambodia Tourist Guides — Introduction

Angkor

Affected by the Civil Wars, Cambodia's economy has being suffering since decades. But now with proper financial help the country is improving economically and politically. Cambodia extends an area of 181035 kilometers (approx) and the population comprises of 95% Khmer, 1% Vietnamese and 4% Chinese. Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia. The country is conveniently connected by road with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and a railroad runs from Phnom Penh to Thailand border. The industries are mostly based on fish processing, rubber, timber products and strict restrictions are imposed on export of antiques.

The weather conditions are appropriate for the cultivation of rice, which is the main crop of Cambodia. Also other vegetables, fruits, corn, cotton, tobacco and peanuts are extensively cultivated.

The topography of Cambodia is abundant with mountains and rivers, lakes and forests, animals and bird life. The best time to visit Cambodia is during December to February. A three weeks stay is recommended. The temples of Angkor are a fascinating sight; Phnom Penh manifests many attractions like jungle trekking, mountain trekking, island hopping, snorkelling, diving and cycling through the rich green countryside.

A visit to discover the interesting everyday life, wonderful sights and riversides dotted with shops and restaurants is highly recommended. Many places like 'The Silver Pagoda', 'The Royal Palace', 'Tuol Sleng Museum', 'Wat Phnom' (pagoda atop a hill), 'The National Museum of Arts' built with red bricks and the Killing fields are worth visiting. Angkor and the lovely beaches of Sihanoukville must be visited. One should also keep the Ratnakiri, Nirachey (the largest park), enchanting Battambang and Angkorian Temples like Wat Banan, Wat Ek Phnom and Phnom Sampeau in the Itinerary.

The Cambodians like to wear loose fittings, light clothing. The Kramas (cotton scarves) is a very important wear for formal occasions. Buddhism is the official religion of Cambodia like Burma and Thailand. But Christianity and Cham Muslims are also popular. Cambodian cuisine includes Chinese, Vietnamese and Mediterranean dishes. Rice, soups, noodles, fried vegetables and spicy curries are the staple diet. Tea, coffee and mineral water are the staple drinks.

When visiting Cambodia, cash should be carried abundantly as ATMs and other monetary institutions are almost nonexistent. Even though many parts of Cambodia is out of bound for tourists due to extremely dangerous mine-fields and dacoits, a visit to Cambodia will be worthwhile to all tourists for its exquisite temples, green countryside and exotic culture.
