Dragon dance mask

Chinese festivals are rich in tradition, excitement and participation. In China's traditional agricultural society, festivals marked the change of the seasons. Festivals such as the Spring Festival (coinciding with the Chinese New Year), the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn festival and the Winter Solstice mark the passage of time.

The Chinese commemorate the changing of the Lunar year with the fifteen-days Spring Festival. This usually falls between late January and February and is celebrated as a family affair, a time for reunion and thanksgiving. The end of the new year celebrations are marked by the Lantern Festival, where homes are lit by colorful lanterns bearing the symbols of good fortune, happiness and health. Throughout the New Year, Lion Dances are held in the streets, where professional dances wearing masks perform to the energetic throbbing beat of drums.

Respecting ancestors and family spirits is an integral part of Chinese culture and tradition, and Chinese families spend 'Tomb Sweeping Day' which falls in April, tending the graves of loved ones.

A day not to be missed is the Dragon Boat festival, held in mid-June in Hong Kong. Commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and patriot, the festival is marked by exciting races in canoes festooned with dragons and colorful pennants.

The Mid Autumn Moon festival ranks second only to the Spring Festival, where the day is set aside to pay respects to the moon. Traditionally, children carry the lanterns and light the way for their elders.

Full moon and silver moon days are commemorated by special prayers held at Buddhist and Taoist temples.

Other festivities during March to June are Guanyin's birthday, Mazu's birthday, the Water Splashing Festival. Ghost month and the birthday of Confucius are celebrated in August and September.
