East India Hotels is the flagship company of the Oberoi group controlled by Rai Bahadur M S Oberoi. The company was formed in 1949. It took on lease a palace in Srinagar and converted it into a deluxe luxury hotel. It has the distinction of building India?s first international hotel at New Delhi in 1965. In 1968, with the amalgamation of Associated Group of Hotels of India Ltd, it acquired ownership of Oberoi Group of Hotels at Calcutta, Delhi, Darjeeling, Shimla and Gopalpur on sea. The Oberoi Sheraton (now Oberoi Towers) Mumbai opened in 1973. Hotel New Oberoi at adjacent location to Mumbai hotal, was added in 1986. The Oberoi Bangalore, commenced its operations in 1992. EIH employee strength is around 6000.
