Each state in India has its own celebrations and so India remains adorned with decorations and festivities almost throughout the year. 'Pongal' and 'Onam' is celebrated in Southern India especially in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, a three-day festival where newly harvested rice is ceremoniously cooked accompanied by drums and music. The Muslims celebrate Id-ul-fitr. The festivals like Baisakhi, Janmastami, Dusshera are celebrated all over in midst of lively colors with pomp and gifts and family get-togethers. Holi, the festival of color, happens during spring. People also have sweets and .bhaang. (an intoxicating drink). Republic day and Independence Day is celebrated by hoisting the national flag and paying tribute to the patriots. During June-July another spectacular Hindu event celebrated throughout India is Rath Yatra. But, the main attraction is Puri in Orissa where millions of people pull the temple cart of Lord Jagannath. The Hindu Bengalees celebrate their famous festival Durga Pujo. Entire India, especially Kolkata, dresses up in lights and .pandals. (bamboo constructions) and people dressed in new outfits exchange gifts and enjoy with pomp. Worshipping the idol of the Hindu Goddess Durga marks this ten-day festival. It symbolizes the triumph of the good over evil. 'Diwali' is a festival of lights. Indians light .Diyas.(oil lamps), burst crackers and spend their time with family and friends. Exchange of gifts and sweets are the highlights of this festival. The Christians in India celebrate Good Friday, Easter and Christmas with great enthusiasm. The churches are decorated and people exchange gifts and decorate their homes with great elegance. Goa is the place to be in Christmas. Guru Nanak's Birthday is celebrated by the Sikhs in the month of November with much splendor. The members of the Sikh Community distribute free food and gifts throughout India. Rakhi Purnima is a unique festival celebrating the brother-sister relationship of affection and love. The sister ties decorated strings on the wrist of her brother, praying for his well being. The Parsee New Year and the Birthday of the Buddha is also celebrated all over of India. India also celebrates other events like the Valentine.s Day and World Environment Day. Regular rallies and public gatherings take place in the parks and squares of India, observing every other event like the World AIDS Day, Labor Day and World Health Day. Kumbha Mela is the largest religious congregation in the world. Kumbha (means pot) and Mela (means fair) is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage that takes place at four different locations of India, namely Prayag, Allahabad (in the state of Uttar Pradesh) at the confluence of three holy rivers- Ganga (Ganges), Yamuna and Saraswati, Haridwar (in the state of Uttar Pradesh) where the river Ganga enters the plains from Himalayas, Ujjain (in Madhya Pradesh), on the banks of River Shipra and Nasik (in Maharashtra) on the banks of River Godavari. The Kumbh Mela takes place four times every twelve years, once at each of the four locations. Each twelve-year cycle completes into the Maha (great) Kumbha Mela at Prayag, attended by millions of people. Sonepur fair
It is Asia's largest livestock fair where you can purchase anything from elephants to camels, buffaloes, cows, goats and any other four-legged creature that moos, moans, grunts or makes a mess. It takes place on the auspicious occasion of Karthik Purnima when 800000 pilgrims take their holy dip at the confluence of the River Ganga and Gandak (in the State of Bihar).
