Japan Tourist Guides — Activities

Market place

Shopping is a major activity for tourists in Japan, with traditional crafts vying for space with the latest in consumer electronics, fashion clothing, state of the art computer equipment and cameras. Local craft such as lacquer ware, silks, pottery, pearl; cloisonn and coral jewelry, paper lanterns, dolls, porcelain, and calligraphy supplies, flower hair ornaments are some of the numerous items available. Green tea, packed seaweed and silk screens are other specialty products.

Apart from shopping, another popular activity in Japan is cycling. Surprisingly Japan has thousands of kilometers of good cycling roads, and biking through scenic bike routes that wind their way through mountains, paddy fields and fishing villages offer an intimate view of local life.

The outdoor lover can also indulge in hiking. Japan's most challenging trek, scales through the 10,000 feet high North Alps, through dense pine forests. Mount Fuji is an easier peak to climb- it has five relatively easy going trails, which do not require special mountain equipment or trekking skills. The trails are dotted with local inns and hot springs for the weary traveler.

Japan's string of islands makes it a Scuba Divers' paradise, with new dive spots being discovered each year. The icy waters from the Arctic wash Japan's northern most tip, whilst warm temperate currents bath its southern shores. On the island of Honshu, the most popular dive spots are on the Izu Peninsula on the east coast, while Osezaki is the best known on the west coast, and most other coastal towns offer a range of shore and boat dives, each a unique experience. Okinawa and the Bonin Islands, further south, offer warm tropical waters, filled with colorful fish, turtles, sea snakes and coral reefs. Hokkaido, on the other hand, has ice diving spots in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Sightseeing, of course, tops the list of activities with a plethora of temples, shrines, gardens, museums to see, and experiences such as the tea ceremony, spectacular theatre such as No and Kabuki, and traditional Japanese hospitality leave the tourist with a unforgettable memories.
