Japan Tourist Guides — Environment

Japanese children

Japan, a chain of islands stretching form the North Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Japan, has temperatures ranging from the cool temperate in the North to the tropical in the South. About two-thirds of Japan consists of rugged and mountainous areas, with only about 10% of the land under urban areas. In spite of a small percentage of land being occupied by cities and industries, Japan is an ecological disaster in the making. Air pollution from power plant emissions resulting in acidification of water resources threatens aquatic life. Being the largest consumers of fish in the world, they are slowly but surely depleting marine life, including endangered species of whales and dolphins. Unhindered consumption of timber is leading to depletion of rain forests.

Natural disasters lend a hand to the degradation of the environment - Japan has countless dormant and active volcanoes, and sees extensive seismic activity regularly.

The cherry blossom is the best-known tree in Japan, and is the country's national flower and symbol. In the month of May, the country comes alive with the colors of the cherry-blossom. The Ume (Japanese plum), Momiji (Japanese Maple), Matsu (Pine) and Take (Bamboo) are some common flora.

Japanese fauna ranges from brown bears in Northernmost Hokkaido to tropical snakes, crested serpent eagles, flying foxes and lizards found on Ryukyu Islands. The tropical seas of Ryukyu Islands abound in colorful tropical fish, turtles and sea snakes, while the North is home to sub-arctic animals such as sea lions, fur seals, beaked whales and walruses.

A large number of animals are facing extinction in Japan, 72 are on the endangered species list, and 65 have been classified as vulnerable. Among the endangered species are the Iriomote Cat, the Japanese Otter, the Albatross and Stork. Unfortunately, Japan's environmental initiatives are few and far between, and are a subject of great concern to the international green movement.
