Laos Tourist Guides Environment The country of Laos is quite hilly and mountainous. These mountains are often lined with silvery white streams and jagged with peaks reaching sky rocketing heights. One of the mountains, which run along the country.s Eastern borders, is the Annamite Mountains, which display rare species of plants and animals. Unlike these, part of Southern Laos has a different tale to tell. Its more of a good farmland but occasionally broken by limestone cropping. Along the Western border of the country flows the Mekong River, which is very important to Laos. It is only through the help of the tributaries of the Mekong River that hydro electrical power project is conducted by Laos, a project that makes Laos profit to a large extent. Historically Laos was called the .land of the million elephant. for elephants were a dream for every wildlife lover visiting Laos. But today they are scarce .An elephant called the .Asian elephant. was famous in Thailand and Indochina. People have hunted for ivory and mass deforestation has led to acute lessening of elephant numbers. Although a few elephants are still found working in Sayaboury and some are still trained in south near Pakse. The .white elephants. or .albinoes. were very famous and considered to be auspicious for they symbolized .regality. in the countries of Thailand and Laos and is also used as a symbol in the flags. In Laos the rule follows that whenever a white elephant is discovered it should be immediately presented to the king. Other than the elephants and their uses in timber trade, the wildlife of Laos also includes tigers, leopards, mongoose, Siamese hare, Javan Rhino and also Irrawaddy dolphins. The remotest corners of the forest also shelters animals like Gibbon monkey, elk, languor and small Asian Bear. Sometime beautiful looking birds can also be seen hopping hither thither. Laos is a landlocked region bordered by Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and China. Forests, mountains and rivers dominate the topography of Laos to a large extent but the country.s economy is basically agriculture based with industries and mainly hydroelectric power mechanism playing an important role. But despite the fact that Laos has faced civil wars and other strife with Vietnam yet it is one of the most serene and ecstatic ecologies in the whole of South East Asia. The primary forests of Laos comprise the tropical rain forests and have trees like Bamboo, Teak and Asian Rosewood. These tropical rain forests are composed of three vegetation layers. The top layer is full of high reaching trees, which are called the .single trunked .or .dipterocarps.. The second layer include hardwood trees like Teak and Asian Rosewoods. The last layer consists of small bushes, shrubs, wild grasses and other wild species of climbers and bamboos.
