Laos Tourist Guides — History

Mekong river

The Lao people who were descendents of Thais gradually started being a part of Khmer empire, till Fa Ngoun founded the potential kingdom of Lan Xang. Lan Xang tormented the Thais, the Vietnamese and the Khmers with incessant wars and conquered a lot of China, stretches of north Thailand and Myanmar. But with internal conflicts taking a larger dimension in 1707, Lan Xang broke to give birth to two other competent empires, Luang Prabang and Vientiane.

Although during the World War II, Japan overtook the Laos kingdom by persuading the ruler of Luang Prabang, but in 1946, very competently, the French re established their rule over the Lao kingdom. After several nationalist movements, and establishments of self-governments and invasion of Pathet Lao guerrillas, at last Laos attained full democracy and sovereignty in the year 1953, and in 1955 Laos got admitted to the list of the United Nations.

A coalition government was established, but it broke down very soon and Laos faced intermittent torments through neutralists, rightists and communists forces, regular cease-fires and attacks of military forces. In 1963, after many years of rigorous warfare all torments gradually ceased and Pathet Lao resourced with potential armies and supplies, started establishing full control over full of North and East Laos. But even Pathet Lao could not stand in front of U.S. bombings of North Vietnamese. The bombings continued incessantly through eastern Laos on Ho Chi Minh trail. In 1969, as the pressure of bombing increased, in 1970, Pathet Lao introduced several and major offensives. The Vietnamese tried to make Laos their base battleground and tried to carry on with the war. In an attempt to cut Ho Chi Minh trail, the Vietnamese made their attacks move further deep into Laos, and it became a dominant battleground. The government of United States extended lots of help and support to the Laotian government. When Pathet Lao tried to establish supremacy once again, the heavy bombings and war ceased, eventually a final agreement occurred between the government and Pathet Lao. This agreement once more led to the formations of coalition governments.

In 1975 Laos attained Republic and this resulted in the majority of the Laotians to flee to United States and Thailand. Finally peace prevailed in Laos with the exception of a few problems now and then.

Since 1989-90 Laos has albeit faced a better government. There was a wholehearted effort for economic revival and Laos was cordially enlisted into ASEAN in 1997. Laos tried to thaw away hostility with the countries and cemented ties with China, United States and Vietnam.

The economy of Laos suffered a terrible setback with constant booms and depressions, inflations and deflations. But now with various political associations, Laos is trying to cope up to become one of the better countries in the world.
