Kek Lok Si temple

The major Malaysian festival is Hari Raya Puasa that signifies the end of fasting month of Ramadan with three days of fantastic celebrations and begins by sighting of the new moon on the day, before the next month on the Muslim calendar, Syawal. The Muslims goes to the Mosque early in the morning with new clothes put on, to offer prayers and then visit the graves of the departed. During this occasion, houses are decorated with lamps and the family celebrates together with friends and relatives.

Chinese New Year in Malaysia is celebrated with lots of fervor by all religion and races. The New Year falls between late January and February and is celebrated with 15 days of Spring Festival. The Hokkien community in Penang celebrates the fifth night in the new calendar, called Chap Goh Meh, in a big way. In this occasion, unmarried women throw oranges into the sea wishing for good husbands and pilgrims visit the Kek Kok Si Temple in Air Hitam.

Fifth Moon Festival, held in mid-June and is observed by the Chinese community staying in the reverine and coastal areas commemorating the death of the famous patriotic poet and scholar, Qu Yuan. This festival is celebrated with exciting dragon boat races.

Mooncake Festival also known as Mid-Autumn Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the Chinese eighth month signifying the end of harvest season and prayers are offered to the moon. On this occasion, the children lit their elders path with lantern and lighted lanterns are hung in front of homes.

Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 7th Lunar month by offering prayers at Buddhist and Taoist temples. On this occasion, offerings of food such as chicken, vegetables, fruits, bean curd and white rice are placed on the roadsides to satisfy their departed ancestors and bring good fortune to their homes.

Deepavali is a Hindu festival celebrated with crackers and lamps. In Malaysia, the day is celebrated as the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. On this day, Lord Krishna killed the evil Narakasura.

Thaipusam, one of the most dramatic Hindu festival, celebrated mostly by South Indians in late January is a festival in which the devotees offer prayers to Lord Subramaniam with acts of amazing masochism. In Kuala Lumpur, this festival is best seen at Batu Caves and Penang and the event is celebrated at the Waterfall Temple.

Pongal, celebrated by the Hindus is held in mid-January and continues for four days that marks overflowing crop harvesting in the field. Kolam i.e the beautiful patterns made on the floor with rice flour are made before sunrise at the entrance of every house and is known to be very auspicious. Sweet rice, i.e. Pongal, is cooked in a new earthenware pot at the place where puja is to be performed and is offered to the Sun God.

Gawai Dayak is a native harvest festival, celebrated on 1st and 2nd June by the Dayak, that refers to the Iban, Bidayuh and the Orang Ulu communities in Sarawak. In this ritual, the elders pray for their ancestors wearing traditional costumes and communicate with the spiritual world and feast with their family and friends.

Pesta Kaamatan is also a native harvest festival celebrated in May by the local tribes, Sabahans or also known as Kadazans. During this festival, locally known as .Tadau Ka.amatan. the Sabahans enjoys a carnival wearing their traditional dresses.

Kaul is also a colorful local festival known as Melanau festival, to satisfy the spirits of the sea, land, forests and farm. Usually held in end of March or early April, the festival is celebrated in the Melanau settlements along the coast. Tibou is the center of attraction during this festival where the youths dive from a 20-foot high bamboo scaffolding to catch a swinging rope.

Christmas, celebrated on 25th December marks the birthday of Christ. On this Christmas Eve, Christians wear new clothes, all houses are decorated with Christmas trees for a week, Christmas carolers go from house-to-house one week before Christmas in their respective zones and surprise gifts and sweets are given away by Santa Claus to the young ones.
