Volcano north island

North Island Situated at the northern most tip of New Zealand, this area is considered to be the birthplace of the New Zealand nation, as the Maori and Pakeha people first made contact here. The Bay of Islands area consists of 144 islands with secluded bays, and is the finest Maritime Park in New Zealand. Blessed with beautiful scenery and an abundance of marine life, this area is often referred to as the 'winterless north' because of mild, unvarying temperatures all the year around.

Rotorua is an area of volcanic and thermal activity where the Maori established their first settlements; the hot thermal springs were ideal for bathing and cooking.

The Waitormo caves, situated to the west of Rotorua, have a vaccinating network of limestone caves and grottos.

New Zealand's largest lake lies south-west of Rotorua in Taupo, where trout fishing is a popular activity. Alpine walking tracks also trail the sides of nearby Mount Tarawere and Mount Ruapehu.

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand - a lively city with a beautiful harbor at the southern tip of North Island. The city's downtown area lines the harbor, with most residential areas perched atop picturesque cliffs with a spectacular view of the surrounding areas. Wellington is the home of a vibrant theatre and arts scene, and has many places of historic significance, such as the old Government Building, which is the largest all-wooden building in the world, the National Library, the Te Papa Museum and a zoo.

Auckland, located on a narrow isthmus on North Island, washed by the Tasman Sea on the west and the endless Pacific Ocean on the east, is built on the remnants of 48 extinct volcanoes. Apart from breath taking scenery, Auckland is known as the City of Sails because of its rich maritime history. It has a host of aquariums and museums, apart from being the most populated city in the country.

South Island The peaks of the Southern Alps dominate the horizons behind the city of Christchurch, which is a coastal city on South Island, and is located in one of the most scenic spots in New Zealand.

Similarly, the city of Queenstown, which is on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, has The Remarkables Mountain range as a backdrop. Queenstown is the city of extreme adventure - offering parasailing, white-water rafting, bungee jumping and speeding down icy rapids in jet boats.

The Fiordland National Park has a stupendous glacier lined coast, with ice-clad peaks of the Southern Alps, alpine trails and magnificent beech forests. Milford Sound has a spectacular landscape of towering mountains, rushing waterfalls and icy lakes.

The Otago Peninsula on South Island is famous for its wildlife and woodlands. The city of Dunedin, a student town, is a center of arts and entertainment, with a rich heritage tinged by its Scottish past.
