Taiwan Tourist Guides — History

Flora green island Taiwan

Perhaps, history of a place can never be traced from the very commencement; there are always lapses to be taken into considerations. Taiwan is no exception, its original launching and early population is not very convincing. Today, however, the aborigine is considered to belong to the group of Austronesian ethno-linguistic, which spans over Madagascar to New Zealand. Ceramic of the Beinan, Chilan and Tapenkeng traditions make Taiwan all the more ethnically branched out.

Many have ruled Taiwan; in 1642 the Dutch merchants came in to deploy the island as a pedestal for commerce transactions with Japan and Mainland China. The Spanish did not stay dormant; they too started making settlements in Santissima Trinidad (on the northwest coast of Taiwan near Keelung), until the Dutch finally threw them out. The Dutch power stayed for long, they set up The Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1662. During their reign they established schools, a tax system. Besides, they made efforts to affect the lingo of the people; evangelizing or the Roman credence was made to impress upon the language of the aborigine. Then arrived a bunch of young Chinese men, who had the bad reputation of murders in their own land. Hunting and escaping from the Government, both were powerful reasons to bring them here, in Taiwan.

Deer became a chief source of trade of Taiwan during this time. They were sold to Japan and China for good money in exchange. The livelihood of the aborigine was forced into another direction when deer became infrequent. After the Dutch set up a colony in 1636, the lives of the aborigine never remained like before, they were tortured, humiliated and enslaved.

With the advent of Zheng Chenggong, in 1661, the time was for a change. The Dutch were thrown out of Zeelandi, their fortress in 1662. The Chinese married the aborigine and they began living as mixed bred. The Qing dynasty continued the rule and in1875 alienated the island into two prefectures, north and south.

Imperial China lost the Sino-Japanese War, surrendered the total island of Taiwan to Japan in 1895. After that the country underwent frequent disputes and chaos. Despite everything, Japan, as a sovereign was favored in Taiwan. The living standard of the people was raised high; there was electricity by 1905. The Japanese Government attempted the Taiwanese to mould in 'Japanese Spirit' and there were also home rule groups to evoke a .Taiwanese consciousness..

During the Second World War, in 1943 the Cairo conference the allied power met a decision, to hand over Taiwan to the Republic of China after Japan surrendered. Finally Japan relinquished dominion of Taiwan in the Treaty of San Francisco in 1951. In the month of October in 1945, when the war was done with, the Nationalists. rule began in Taiwan.

However the initial period was full of anarchy, Nationalist Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) Government led to local rebels and was shortly followed by White Terror in which thousands of Taiwanese were slaughtered. The government tried its best to hush it up. And not until 1995, in a declaration of President Lee Teng-hui, there was an open acknowledgement of the massacre that colored the pages of Taiwan history. Perhaps, it is better late than never.

Taiwan never had its peace; 1930s onward a Civil War was in progress in China, amid Chiang Kai-shek's ROC government and the Communist Party of China guided by Mao Zedong. In October 1949 the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.) was established on the mainland by the triumphant Communists materialized as the vanquisher. Taiwan has come a long way, surviving lot of apprehensions and frictions within its boundaries. Diplomatically, Taiwan has made it possible in sustaining its indigenous tradition with the changing political scenario. Thus, not only for nature and its endowments, Taiwan is also a place of extremely interesting history. So, come and grab whatever the isle has to offer you!
