Thailand Tourist Guides — History

Temple of Emerald-Buddha

The Thais founded Thailand whose long history only adds to its attraction. Although the country was under the constant threat from Khmers and the Burmese, yet the Thais established a united independent state. On the termination of the Thai monarchy in 1932, Thailand henceforth endured 60 years of tense situation of military rule before the democratic system got established.

Recent studies include that almost by 4000 B.C., Thailand was the center of bronze metallurgy. Even cultivation of rice and success in the business of rice led to an impetus to the country's development. Thais linguistically owes a great deal to the tribes originating in southern China.

The Thai kingdom was finally established only after the Khmer lords at Sukthothai were thrown away. After the renunciation of the Khmer lords, the Thai kingdom was once more established on the Chao Phraya River. Research studies claimed that before this kingdom of Sukthothai was re-instated the Lannathai kingdom flourished prosperously. The Lannathai kingdom had a long gory history of independences and alliances to offer before it ultimately became known as Ayutthaya kingdom.

The Ayutthaya kingdoms helped to Thailand prosper with the help of the dutiful king Ramathibodi I. He made two striking contributions: firstly he introduced Theravada Buddhism as the official religion. Secondly he compiled the Dharmashastra a code on traditional Thai customs, which became a legal tool of Thai law and continued to be the same till early 20th century.

The wretched Burmese armies brought the kingdom of Ayutthaya and split it after burning its capital. A benevolent general Taksin helped revive the kingdom by uniting it with his capital Thonburi but he too could not continue. Then Rama I the first king of the magnificent Chakri dynasty build the city of Bangkok across Chao Phraya River. The Thais attribute the escape of Thailand from European colonization to a couple of factors: the diplomatic adeptness of the monarchs like Mongkut, Chulalongkorn and to the modernized laws and customs of the Thai Government. This unnamed success is reflected in the name 'Prahet Thai' for Prahet means nation and Thai means 'free'.

Rulers like king Prajadhipok and Ananda Mahidol reigned supremacy after the government in Thailand and transformed from, absolute to the constitutional monarchy. In midst of an alternating series of military governments and democracy Thailand has now been experiencing a stable democratic Govt., since 1992 elections.

Thailand after undergoing the various facets of Government and suffering after alliance with Japan is now a free democratic peaceful country and an active member of regional association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
