Turkey Tourist Guides Events With almost 98 percent Muslim population residing in Turkey, Muslim religious festivals are celebrated in a grand scale. These festivals, however, follow a different lunar calendar, called Hijri calendar. The two main religious events, which are declared as National Holidays, are Kurban Bayrami (March - April) and Seker Bayrami. Ramadan or Ramazan (as called in Turkey) is another significant religious do that is celebrated with hues and cries all over the nation. This lasts for 30 days and during this entire period a fast is kept during the daylight hours. Not only eating, but cursing, lying, harming others or any bad behavior is prohibited during the fasting of Ramazan. At the end of Ramazan comes Seker Bayrami or festival of sugar . a 3 day national festival. This is the time to socialize and to exchange sweets and other gifts. Kurban Bayrami is by far, the most important religious Holiday in Turkey. This 4-day festival commemorates Abraham.s willingness to sacrifice his son Issac at God.s (Allah) command on Mt. Moriah. In all the Turkish households, who can afford, a sheep is usually sacrificed on this day after early morning prayers, to mark God.s permitting Abraham to sacrifice a lamb instead of his son. Secular festivals include Mesir Macunu (Power Gum) festival in Manisa, which honors the curative power of Elixir (containing 41 spices) that cured Ottoman Sultan Suleyman.s mother, Strawberry festival in Bartin (June) and Apricot festival in Malatya (July). The latter two are celebrated to mark the harvesting of the crops. During the summer months of June-July, there are several other festivals like an oil wrestling festival (June) at Sarayi, the international Istanbul festival of the Arts (late June to mid July) and Folklore and Music festival of Bursa (mid July). A major event of the Turks is the camel wrestling (mid January), which takes place in the village of Selk.
