Vietnam Tourist Guides Culture  Though Vietnam has always been under the influence of Western Europe for the past hundred years, Chinese culture occupies a major place among the Vietnamese since a large number of Chinese population occupies the country. Both Taoism and Buddhism prevail in Vietnam along with other religion like Confucianism, and Christianity. Buddhism is of Mahayana form though Theravada tradition is also there and in Vietnamese literature Dhamma literature comes in the Pali Canon and the Chinese Agamas. Both Taoism and Buddhism preach its followers to be virtuous, non-violent and compassionate to others. Music and Art
There are two types of music in Vietnam, traditional music and Western European art and popular music. The government has also taken initiative to introduce a new type of music, which has Western lineage to it. In Vietnam music plays an important role where theatre is concerned. The combination of songs along with mime, dance, decorations, costumes and music is a unique experience to watch. Water puppet theatre is very popular there. Other art forms include paintings on silk, woodwork, ceramics, religious sculpture, lacquer art, block printing, etc. Poetry plays an important role where literature is concerned. Songs
Folk songs mark the differences from one region to another. These songs are mainly sung during the seasonal festivals, parties or work. Though the Western pop songs are influencing the Vietnamese, still they are maintaining a unique harmony between their own traditional music and the Western culture. Language
Vietnamese, being the official language is extremely adaptable with a lyrical bend to it. There are other different dialects and languages among the ethnic groups though. Chinese is spoken most widely among foreign language along with English, Russian and French. Cuisine
Rice is their staple food but Vietnamese cuisine has strong Chinese, French and Thai influence. Their rich cooking includes herbs like lemon grass, basil, coriander, parsley, lime etc. Soup is a must with every meal along with their national spice nuoc mam, a fermented fish sauce. Tropical fruits like pineapple, coconuts, melons, grapes, green dragon fruit are a delicacy so are mouth-watering vegetarian and rare meat preparations. Vietnamese coffee is well known all over Vietnam. Snacks like spring rolls, steamed rice dumplings, noodles are not to be missed.
